The Independence Square (formally Torrington Square) also houses the Independence Memorial Museum and the Independence Memorial Hall - a national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the establishment of Dominion of Ceylon on February 4, 1948. Currently it is the venue for annual national day celebrations as well as a recreational park for children and adults alike and is a popular venue for jogging and running enthusiasts. Shopping complexes such as the Independence Arcade, Race Course and food outlets are available nearby. There is an indoor and outdoor gymnasium free for public use along with a cycling track with cycles available for renting.
