Often refers to a surfer riding a wave standing up on a surfboard; this is also referred to as stand-up surfing. Another prominent form of surfing is body boarding, when a surfer rides a wave on a bodyboard. Surfing requires and builds cardiovascular stamina, upper body and core strength. However, swimming skills and safety supervision is necessary for beginners.
Arugam Bay on the East coast is regarded as one of ten top surf spots in the world and is popular during July and August when surfers during its season. Beaches on the south coast, such as Hikkaduwa, Weligama and Mirrisa, are popular from November to April.
